ABA or AVB with a non-autistic child?

Anonymous
Has anyone used ABA or AVB with a non-autistic child? If so, what did you think? I'm a little wary of starting this with DC. Thanks in advance for any info or insight.

Who is recommending it? What skills are you hoping to teach? What are your child's issues? I'd say offhand that it probably isn't the best methion but it would help to know more.

We have used both approaches with our non-autistic child who has motor planning and sensory issues, and a speech delay, and they have worked wonders. I would highly recommend it. ABA is more rigid, and AVB focuses more on natural environment teaching/learning. For our child, the structure and repetition built into these programs worked much more rapidly than just speech and OT. We do speech and OT as well, and the combination is just right.

Thank you 8:39, that's just what I was looking for. ABA sounds pretty rigid to me too, but we'd actually be talking about AVB. DC is very bright and has received ST for a speech delay. Even though DC now tests in normal range on a variety of tests there are still some pragmatic speech issues which are holding DC back and we're exploring the possibility of AVB to assist with those. I've tried googling for information, but haven't really found what I was looking for. I think we'll stay with the ST & OT we're currently doing, but there may some value in adding AVB to the mix.

If anyone else has input, I'd love to hear it.

ABA was torture for my son. We switched to floortime and just massive OT, which he thoroughly loved. Within one and a half years he was a different child.

Can you tell me more about AVB? I've heard of ABA, how is it different? I'd love to hear how it might be helpful for speech delays and pragmatic language.
