do you have any good ideas for getting volunteer hours in for a middle schooler? |
Where? |
Nursing home. Old people LOVE young people. ASPCA. |
Thats young.
Nursing home? Children's cancer ward? |
At school. Lots of help needed after school.
My two then preteens helped set up for science fair, assisted in adaptive PE classes, helped with a school wide fundraiser, staffed field day at elementary school. |
Why not let your middle schooler be able to figure this out herself? Part of the benefit of volunteer hours is figuring out where there might be a need for volunteers, learning how to find volunteer opportunities, etc |
Most have a min age of 18 for ongoing voulneteers due to liability issues. |
What are the requirements for supervision? I've done fundraising focused service projects with kids as young as elementary. For the most part, kids' time aren't very helpful to any org. Money/in kind donations at least result in a net benefit. |
Road races or other sporting events. Marathons and tris are great - they often need people at water stations handing out or collecting discarded cups. Kids are great for this as they have lots of energy to go back and forth to the station to get the filled cups - they're also SO encouraging to the athletes.
You'll have to volunteer along with them, but really - they're a lot of fun to volunteer at. |
+1 There are races every weekend this time of year, and races are always looking for volunteers! |
It's the wrong season for this, but my mother has twin middle school boys living next door. They got a lot of their community service by shoveling her out of the snow this winter. She paid them last winter, but they needed the hours more, so they did it for free this year. Bonus!
Maybe lawn mowing or weeding for neighbors? |
Contact the local Rotary or Kiwanis clubs and find out if they have any projects going on that you can join. Growing up, my Dad was in Rotary and I did a lot with his club - cleaning up after local floods, landscaping for the township in public parks, helping at HS cross country races, staffing Special Olympics events, etc. |
Do you have a church? My church has volunteer opportunities with the Salvation Army's mobile soup kitchen.
If you're near Arlington, you might contact AFAC to see if the soup kitchen has events coming up. If your teen is female and is walking distance to an elementary school, maybe their Girls on the Run chapter could use another volunteer. |
I work at a middle school...some of our students have done the following:
Honor Flight greeting at the airport Some Fairfax County libraries give service hours for writing book reviews DC Diaper Bank sorting Sorting food at the local food bank |
Volunteer for a political campaign! |
