Talent for singing

Anonymous
I am a first generation immigrant, have been in US for some years now. I have a 12 year old daughter who sings very well, at least I have been told so by many who have heard her sing.

My daughter wants to explore options in singing. In her words, "I just want to sing for an audience.. just want to sing". She sings mostly Pop, Rock N Roll, some country...Although I am eager for her to showcase her talent, I am skeptical about her joining bands, over exposure, losing track of her academia...So, looking for something akin to Kids Theatre.

Any input/guidance is appreciated.

Does she participate in her school or church's choir? Teachers are good source of information

+1. Also, once she is ready for HS, she could audition for Duke Ellington.

She should do plays - they have songs. Even if her acting is only mediocre, they'll cast her for her voice. Look for local theatre opportunities - you can ask at the public library.

Children theaters have musical classes/auditions. She could join a school choir.

Thank you very much. She does plays, I will encourage her to pursue more of it. To the person who posted about Duke Ellignton, I will look into that as well. Thank you.

Are you in Virginia, DC, or Maryland? There are good kids' theater classes and also children's choirs and other singing groups in different areas. In Northern Virginia, there are classes and singing lessons and performance opportunities at Encore Stage, Levine School, and other places. In Bethesda, there's Bach to Rock (camps, music school, activities like glee club and joining a band), and Imagination Stage musical theater classes, and other places. In DC, Theatre Lab has musical theater camps for kids.
Joining the chorus or doing musical theater will be good experience in singing and performing, and doesn't need to take her away from academia (kids with extracurricular interests often do well in school and learn to plan their time well).

I took voice lessons as a teen in NoVa. A voice coach was recommended by my 8th grade music teacher. It was sort of through the high school so a Hs choir director would know top. Lessons taught me so Much about confidence. I never used singing professionally or for anything past high school I guess. But I love singing to my babies now and i could teach beginner lessons now too, or possibly put in some time and do vocal entertainment if needed for an event.
