What is appropriate to wear to Shabbat services at a Conservative congregation? I am not Jewish, but will be attending services with my infant while visiting family.
Can I wear black pants and a sweater/cardigan? What about the baby? The baby doesn't really have any dressy clothes... Thanks! |
| What you describe is totally appropriate. Think office casual. Many women will wear skirts, but you certainly don't have to. The baby's dress is totally inconsequential. |
| Make sure knees and elbows are covered. So pants with a cardigan may be more appropriate in this instance than a knee length dress. |
It's Conservative not Orthodox. Just look halfway presentable and you'll be fine OP. |

Black pants and a sweater sounds fine. No jeans, no sneakers, no bare shoulders. In my conservative temple a skirt that ends right above the knee would be fine too.
Put the baby in the nicest thing she's got and don't give it another thought. Just make sure you have an aisle seat so you can walk out to the lobby when the baby fusses. |
| Business casual as you suggest sounds fine. |
| OP here. Thanks everyone! |
| Why didn't you post this in the religion forum? |
| If you are a guest for a wedding or bar mitzvah you need to dress up. |
| I think you'll feel more comfortable in a skirt. Put the baby in something nice, it doesn't have to be fancy. |
Generally, if it is ok for the office, it is ok for a conservative shul. |
