Advice on pruning a Foster's Holly?

Anonymous
Hi. I need to prune a Foster's Holly in my tiny Capitol Hill front yard and would appreciate any tips. I need to take in the width because it is crowding access to a service area when the garbage cans are kept. I understand these hollies can be pruned any time of the year. It's about 15 feet high and 7 feet wide, kind of like a cylinder.

My plan is to just go at it with hedge trimmers as best I can, then hedge shears or loppers for anything the trimmers won't cut. I'm not sure how I'm going to keep it even. Just eyeball it I guess. Any advice is appreciated.

Cut it back in next few weeks (before warm weather) - shearing it back a little narrower than you ultimately want it. Will probably be sparse this year but will fill in. You probably will not have berries this year either. The base should be wider than top or it will be shaded out and lose leaves (think very broadly triangle.) Even just slightly. Fosters can be very heavily clipped - and you can 'top' them off too (chose height you want to keep them to.)

Sounds good. Thank you.
