Preschool and Daycare Discussion
| Can anyone recommend a good daycare provider? I have a 3-year-old with really bad eczema and food allergies. Just to give you an idea no wheat, eggs, soy, corn (and you would be surprised all of the things that have corn syrup in them), peanuts, shell fish. Not to mention seasonal allergies and eczema. She flares up often and is very limited to the things she can use on her skin. My current daycare provider is moving and now I am looking for something else. She was an in-home provider that only cared for her and one other child. I am looking for someone who can deal with all that she has going on whether it is center or home care provider but someone I will not have to worry while I am at work. She has several medicines that she takes as well. |

Wow, that's got to be difficult. Here's how our center works:
It provides breakfast, lunch, and snacks. It is a peanut free free facility. Each room has an allergy list that the teachers check before feeding the kids. They also need dr.'s orders in order to be able to dispense medicine (state law). I think it would be difficult for a 3yo to have to eat special food (probably brought from home) every day in a setting so intensely social. Unless he/she is already used to it from everyday life. |
| Where are you looking? My DC's Kindercare in Rockville has been great with my DC (not as severe, but does have some issues) and a boy who's got the same type of food allergies you list. His mom brings in a separate breakfast and lunch for him (the center usually provides meals), but they are mindful not to give him things he's allergic to (snacks, etc.). They also dispense medication as needed with a doctor's note. |

She is used to it. She knows that certain foods will make her itch so if we tell her that she can't have it because it will make her itch she will stay away from it. Most of the time anyway. Her biggest problem is when she tries to sneak soda. I am already sure that I will have to supply her food for wherever she goes. It will just be safer that way. I am just looking for someone/somewhere that will watch her closely.
We are located closer to the other end of dc. Near the woodrow wilson bridge. I guess we are on the MD/DC/VA line. |
I am located in Alexandria, not far from the WW bridge. Just off the beltway at Telegraph Road south, 1.5 miles from the metro. After doing childcare for 27 years, I am not looking to care for a large group anymore, just a few kids. I have a permit through Fairfax County Office for Children and am CPR / First Aid certified. if you would like more info or to set up a time to meet, feel free to contact me at mnchkds1@aol.com |
| Can anyone recommend a daycare, preschool or nanny that is skilled in caring for a child with food allergies? I have a 21 month old that has peanut, tree nut, egg, garlic, sesame seed, and beans of any kind allergies. We would prefer a preschool setting for socialization but we need a program that is use to caring for children with allergies. |

Most daycares can accommodate children with allergies very well. My daycare had a special snack box with approved safe snacks for the child with allergies, and the child was very aware not to eat the other food. The daycare center also had all the children wash there hands and faces both before and after eating to prevent the child from coming in to contact with any food (this child had very severe, life threatening food allergies, and her skin would also break out if she came into contact with certain foods).
So they were very accommodating and there were never any problems. Talk with the daycare and the teachers about it. These days teachers are used to children with allergies. |
