| When DC was born we were living in VA in Loudon and took out a 529 prepaid for her and a 529 money market. We moved to MD and bought a house before DC went to Kindergarden, as my husband got a job in Baltimore. We have been contributing to her VA 529 prepaid and non prepaid 529 since she was born. The problem is we now live in MD and VA is out of state. DC is in 8th grade this year and I am wondering if we should sell our home and move back to VA? or if we do should it be in 9th grade or 11th grade? Or what we should do at this point? Any advice would be appreciated. DC wants to be a vet and wants to go to VA Tech. She is thinking of doing engineering as an undergrad and applying to vets school. Thank you for assistance. I am so confused about this process. Money is an object since she will be in school for at least 8 or 9 years. |
| VT vet school is in-state for MD residents. You still have to deal with undergrad, though. |
| That would fully leverage your investment, yes. In-state tuition and all that. |

Hubby would have a terrible commute if we move now. I was wondering if we should do it maybe in 11th grade. It seems unfair to her though, because she will lose all her friends. Also we won't loss or gain anything on selling our house it would be a wash.

I sympathize, but can't imagine moving a high school girl her junior year. Better to move at the beginning of HS. |

I fully support earning a Va. Tech engineering degree as a fallback for when she realizes how horribly veterinarians are paid. Those jobs are for heiresses and fancy wives these days. No way are they for middle class kids.
Good luck with the moving decision. In-state tuition makes a big difference. |
Given the $1000K+ my vet wants just to clean my dog's teeth, I beg to differ. |

You could consider transferring her prepaid into the regular 529 account and then paying more into that account monthly. I recently did that since my DC doesn't want to go to school in VA anyway and we realized that it would actually pay out less than we put in when she attends an OOS school.
If your DD is in 8th grade, her future educational plans are probably not set in stone. |
Actually it's not a wash; there are a lot of costs involved in selling a house and moving, even if you buy a house that costs the same. I wouldn't move. Send your daughter to UMD; it's a better school. Use the 529 for Vet school at VT. |
I added up the amount I spent on my pets over the last 10 years. The last time I took my do to the vet I saw the Mercedes the owner drives and thought to myself "I paid for that!" I think owning a vet practice can still be very lucrative. |
+ 100 on all points |

I'm wondering why you continued to fund a VA prepaid plan when you had moved out of state.
