Squash bugs "overwintering" in compost

Anonymous
This summer, I had a terrible squash bug problem in my garden. Before I realized what they were and how destructive they could be, I was throwing the plants they killed into the compost and then re-using that soil, thus perpetuating the squash bug life cycle. I read that "hot composting" can kill everything in there and I've tried it ever since then. Has anyone done this with success? Would you put that compost down in the garden or will the squash bugs come back regardless?
Thanks!

They over winter in the ground. So compost should be good.
