Good source for seeds and direct sowing seeds for greens

Anonymous
I picked up some seeds (lettuce) from Home Depot and tried to sow them but they are so fine, I can't spread them evenly. Any strategies to avoid a huge clump of plants in one spot.

You can get pelleted seeds, which are easier to sow.
Johnny's Selected Seeds and Territorial Seed are good sources.

Get a cheese shaker or a salt shaker with large holes. Mix the seeds in with some white flour and shake the seeds onto your soil. The flour lets you see where seeds have already hit the soil. We use this method of kids gardening and it has been quite successful.

Thank you, I'll look for them.

you can also mix them in with find sand and a shaker...works well too and less issues with the sand rotting (flour might rot/get mold)

Flour hasn't been a problem as it dissipates right away when you water the seedlings, but don't use corn flour or corn meal (it suppresses germination).
