Pros and Cons of Homeschooling in VA vs DC

Anonymous
Hello,

Looking to homeschooling both of my teenage kids starting in the fall of 2015. We currently live in the Mclean area and was wondering if any there any benefits to homeschooling in VA (Fairfax County or Arlington County) vs the District. We are prepared to relocate (we are renters so it's easy) if the benefits stack up. We are comfortable in Mclean but Arlington and DC may offer better access to events, resources and diversity.

Appreciate your thoughts.

Repost this on the Well Trained Mind Forum. It is a forum for homeschoolers and afterschoolers that generates probably as much traffic as DCUM. While there are plenty of deeply religious parents, there are just as many secular homeschoolers. Many people there will give you the pros and cons of homeschool in VA vs. DC.

For what it's worth, there seems to be a very robust homeschooling community in Takoma Park/Silver Spring. I meet kids in the neighborhood and at our music studio all the time who are homeschooled, and may are part of a homeschooling co-op up this way.

There are some NoVa yahoo groups for homeschooling. There are also some coop classes-one called Compass in Oakton (?) and one run by the Nova Unschoolers in Clifton.

In Virginia homeschoolers may take classes a la carte (this is handy for science classes involving a lab, advanced math courses, foreign languages, robotics etc.) and homeschooled students may play on school sports teams. This is not allowed in Maryland or DC.
