Mini split or portable a/c for basement?

| We need some air con and heat in our basement and are torn between going with a cheap option like a portable ac unit that also does heat (around $4-500), or going the more expensive route and getting a mini-split ($3000?). Thoughts on either? |

We had a mini split installed when we put an addition on the house. We love it. It's really low maintenance, quiet, effective, and efficient. Ours does heat as well.
If you're going to be in the house for several years, I would go ahead with the mini split. It's a more permanent solution, and will probably make the space more enjoyable than a portable AC. One thing I wanted to mention is that our mini split cost $5k, and we got several quotes. It may be that we needed a more powerful unit, but just wanted to put that out there. |
