We need a large volume of dirt to even out our backyard. What's the best source for this? It would probably be very expensive to buy bags from Home Depot for the volume we need. We have seen free dirt signs, but not sure how we could contain and transport it. We would like to plant grass on it, so it should be at least somewhat fertile.
I have absolutely no experience with planting and yard stuff, so explain like I'm 5. Thanks! |
| You don't want the free fill dirt. You want top soil. There are places that deliver it in bulk (should be able to find by Google). Do you have trees? You cannot add a thick layer of dirt over the root systems of existing trees because it will suffocate them. I'm not sure how many inches is acceptable, but research that before you kill you your trees. |
| Thank you PP. Forgot to ask, how do I measure how much I will need? I just need to fill in a bunch of uneven areas around the backyard. Can I estimate based on my square footage? |

Where are you located?
RELS landscaping for one, delivers in bulk in MoCo. You can find calculators online based on the square footage and depth of coverage you need. |
It's sold in cubic yards. So you have to determine your cubic yard needs. Google will help |
| I second RELS and measuring. We got gravel delivered from them. You definitely want top soil. The deeper the good soul is the better your grass will be in the long run. |
| There are calculators that will help. But it will be more than you need. You may also want some leafgro mixed in if you plan to plant shrubs or trees. Compro mix for turf. |
| Are the additives safe for kids? I'm sure my toddlers will be eating more than s little of this soil. |
