I have been going to a fairly pricey salon for 5+ years. I just switched from highlights only to full color plus highlights due to increasing gray (I'll only get the highlights ~twice a year, though). They do a great job for color and for cuts, but the price of the cut has risen from $50 to $80 since I've been going there. And my hair is thin, fine, stick straight, shoulder length, no layers or anything, really easy to cut. Can I start going to the Hair Cuttery or something for cuts, but keep going to the salon for color only? Even if the color person I go to is partnered with the person who cuts my hair? I need to cut this outlay since I haven't worked since having a baby many months ago, but am afraid to mess around with color. Any input appreciated, thanks!
I'd say go for it. If my hair only needed a simple cut, this is what I would definitely do. I am sure they'll be happy to get your business for just the color too.

Of course you can. To save money, I stopped getting my hair colored and highlighted (do it myself) but still go to the same lady for cutting. Each and every time she asks "we are not coloring it today?" and each time i say "I loved what you did, but I can't afford it anymore." She accepts it. Now she does tell me when she has a "sale" and I just laugh and tell her a box of color is $7. So far she's never offered to match the price.
I know other people that go to different places simply because they like the colorist at one spot and the stylist at another. Just make it clear when you make the appointment that you only want the color and highlight. If asked why you are there, I would be honest. It's possible they will offer to lower the price. |
OP here - thanks for the responses!
A few months ago I started coloring my own hair in order to save money. It's a pain but my color still looks good. Right now I still pay for a good haircut but now I think I need to switch to a cheaper salon. My plan is to take a bunch of photos of my last haircut with my good stylist and bring those with me to the cheaper salon.
