Cheapest place for soil

Anonymous
I have two new raised beds and need a lot of soil to fill them. I saw Home Dept has 2 cubic feet bags for $8, the local nursery charges $12. Does it get any cheaper? Looks like I'll have to spend $80 just for soil.

You can get free compost from the DC govt and Greenbelt govt. Combine that with some vermiculite, or not. Either way your garden will grow.

Saw some at the dollar store.

You need soil. Not just compost.

Nurseries will sell it by the yard but you have to pick it up.

If you really are looking for the cheapest option, use free compost and mulch.

In DC: at Fort Totten http://dpw.dc.gov/service/fort-totten-transfer-station The guard at the gate will direct you to the correct container. Bring your own shovel and containers.
In Greenbelt: at Northway Field, 8108 Northway Road. Drive around to the back of the ball field, on the left.

You could buy some vermiculite and peat moss to add to it, if you want to spend some money. Look on Craigslist to see if any local farmers are advertising compost, top soil, soil, square foot gardening mix, peat moss, vermiculite. I've gotten free compost off of Craigslist from local sheep farmers.

The only problem I have found with the free mulch and compost is weeds. There are always weeds mixed in and it is a nightmare in the garden.
