No. If you don't hit it off with your classmates in Paris then you're out of luck. First-year is when most friend groups are formed and you get acclimated to campus.

Ah, so GW I’d jumping on the Northeastern bandwagon! My kid would be all about this.

Accepted at GW, waitlisted at AU.
Yes, we went on tours to both places. I believe my kid met with representatives when they came to the high school. I don't think we did much else with either of these schools -- we are local and know many alumni and there's tons of information online, and we honestly didn't actually have many questions in the prospective student phase. We had enough good information to know that my kid wanted to apply.

In retrospect, we didn't "play the game" enough, especially with AU, to demonstrate interest.

We mistakenly thought excellent gpa, challenging transcript, many APs (all 5s so far), excellent SAT score, strong ECs, strong essay, strong letter of recommendation would be enough. (Also both parents are AU alums, though I understand that is no longer a factor.) Silly us. We should have made up some questions to admissions, and should have opened all the emails, and gone through more of the demonstrated interest hoops.

Admissions is impossible, for the students (and their families) and also for the admissions staff.

Congrats on GW! Maybe they can transfer to AU if they keep their grades up? If they demonstrate interest I bet they can get off the WL, but seriously…is it common to choose AU over GW these days?

I graduated in the early 90s. Doubt I could get in now. Two of my three kids applied (all three at Ivies now). One of the two got in. Kid was legacy (my kid) and accepted to an Ivy and didn't get in. It's gotten hard. Other one got in (different year probably). Maybe Yield protection. I was an active alumni. Donations, boards, etc.

My DC was accepted with a nice merit package for all 4 years. Great GPA, ECs, recs and essay. TO. We expected an admit , the merit was a surprise.

Sure is…

DD is a recent grad, not worth it at 65K and most definitely not worth it at 90K.
