AAP testing for new students? Fcps

Anonymous
We are moving into fcps this summer and my son will be entering
3rd grade. Our current district does not have any sort of gifted program. I understand the aap program begins in 3rd so we will have missed the testing. How do I get him tested? Is it parent request?

I see that. However we are coming from out of state in a small rural district with no normed testing in our current district before 3rd and very basic report cards. No formal IQ testing. How do I go about getting this information?

If you want placement immediately over the summer, you need to pay for the WISC test either through a private tester or through George Mason University. We did ours with a private tester from out of state before moving here, but make sure to attach a copy of their license. If you don't care whether your DC starts immediately in the Fall, they test all new students and will make a determination in the Fall so that the DC (if eligible) can start after Winter break. We wanted continuity, so we paid the cost of the WISC for summer placement so DC could start in the Fall like everyone else - esp. Important if you're choosing a center school over LLIV or base school. Over the summer, it takes about 2-3 weeks once everything is submitted to find out whether DC is in. Please note that this option is only available to people new to the county.

they have testing every year. Tell the Assistant Principal you want your son tested this year. He can enter AAP for 4th.

If you are enrolling without any prior testing, then it will be done in the fall of your child's third grade year. If the scores and recommendations of the teachers point to your child being recommended for Level IV services, a transfer at the end of second quarter to a center where Level IV is offered can be done.

When you enroll in the summer, get the name of the school's Advanced Academic resource teacher so you can email him/her directly when school begins.

FCPS will not test your child in the summer or before school begins. If you feel your child will qualify to begin third grade at a Level IV center, you will need to come with testing results (see list of accepted tests in the link above) when you enroll.

Incorrect. If found eligible, the student can begin at the end of second quarter (end of January). 15:17 and 15:22 are correct.

So all we need is the WISC-IV score? What is the typical entry score for a 3rd grader?

the fact they can enter earlier doesn't make the statement incorrect. Our DC did just that, passed the test and entered in 4th.

There is no such thing as "passing the test." For the CogAT, there is a cut off score which puts your kid in the pool. Even if your kid is in pool, it doesn't mean that they will be found automatically eligible.

128, actually, and on appeal. There are many kids that got in with significantly lower coat's, but through the general process.
