When walking my 5 month old lab puppy my hands are getting rope burn from the cheap nylon leash.
Any recommendations for a comfortable leash, especially as we're training her to behave on a leash? |
| Planet dog has nice leashes where the handle is lined with fleece. |
| try a gentle leader or sense-ation harness - it'll help with the behavior. |
| Leather! I volunteer for an organization that raises labs to be guide dogs. All of them swear by leather leashes. I've yet to get one and I (literally) feel your pain as my lab is now 70 lbs. The gentle leaders may also work but we're not allowed to use them with our dogs as the organization wants to teach appropriate walking with regular collars. |
| Remember, DC law is that leashes must be 4-feet or less. |
|
Get a European leash. It wraps around your shoulder-torso and you only have to guide with your hand on the leash.
It unclips to make a normal leash for when need be. |

We have a leather leash but commonly use cotton web and one has a liner on the wrist wrap. All leashes are 4 feet except for a very long training lead used inside or in our yard only. We use a collar like this but no buckle and it is adjustable: http://dogs.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Dog_Training_Collar_and_Lead

| Kong makes a really nice leash with a padded handle. And we use an Easy Walk harness that clips in the front, it doesn't stop him from pulling but it takes some of the power out of it and relieves my hand and arm. |
+1 I use this exact combination for my big-time puller and it's been a life(and wrist)saver! |

Get a leather leash and treat it with mink oil (you can find it in the shoe care section). It will be long lasting, weatherproof, and feel like butter in your hands. I've had a couple leather leashes that are 10 years old that keep getting better with age.
Keep up the training classes! |
| You should hold the leash loop in your left hand, run it across you're body to your right hand, and keep the dog on your right. Never let the dog lead and always keep the pup to your right. It shouldn't matter what kind of leash you use as long as you are walking the dog properly. |
