Winterizing you fig tree?

Anonymous
Our very large fig tree suffered major damage last winter. We cut it way back and, thankfully, it recovered over the summer. We now have many strong young branches. We have heard that this coming winter may be just as bad, so we would like to winterize the tree. I've read packing the base with mulch, tying up the branches and wrapping the whole tree in burlap is a good approach. But I have also seen where people then wrap the entire thing in plastic, put a bucket on top, you name it. Anyone have direct experience on how to do this?

There is lots of stuff on the Internet about wrapping fig trees -- especially in the New York area.

But why do you want to wrap your fig tree, if it was able to survive last winter without wrapping?
