Which schools are strongest in the Arts?

Anonymous
Our dd is very creatively inclined, and we would appreciate some feedback on the reputations of the various private schools in terms of their strength in the Arts.

Especially would love to hear from BTDT parents who also have creatively inclined children.

Thanks!

Our child is very into painting and drawing, and WIS has been a good fit. The art teachers are top-notch, and the aftercare art class instructors are excellent, too. The lead music teacher is exceptional.

We chose Norwood for our DC who also seemed creatively inclined. The visual art program really stood out when we toured, and now that we are at the school, we have come to realize how strong the music program is. We just got our first progress report in the mail and I was pleased to see a progress report from the music teacher included with the other reports from reading, math, etc. Our DC is in K.

I second Norwood.

Are there any besides WIS that have some racial/ethnic diversity?

Capitol Hill Day School is diverse and has arts fully integrated into its entire curriculum -- including its unique field education program.

Ditto Norwood - first-rate art, music, drama

How old is your DC?

OP here. She is only 3.4, but she has been drawing representational art - at her own initiative - since she was 18 m/o. She now draws entire, recognizable scenes with people, animals, plants, sky features (including weather), etc. She is also very into music and has been asking to learn how to play the violin since she was 2. Since it's been over a year and doesn't seem to be a passing fancy, we'll be starting her in violin lessons imminently.

If you're looking for somewhere that's diverse, Grace Episcopal Day School has a very strong program. The art teacher is a printmaker whose works are in the collection of the National Museum for Women in the Arts. The kids do all kinds of art, from painting to sculpture, to linoleum block to etchings to clay--and I'm sure I've forgotten something. The music program is also quite good. They use the Orff method and instruments for the youngest students (up to about second grade). The older students study music theory, composers, recorder, tone chimes, African drums, other percussion, and they compose their own music using Garage Band. The only thing they don't really have is a band and orchestra program--it's an after school club with about 10 kids, mixed wind and string instruments.

Another one for Norwood. You could tell from just walking around on the tour that art and music are valued there.

St. Patrick's has some pretty amazing art up in the halls, too.

I was also impressed with Sheridan!
