Calculators for 3rd grader in AAP

Hi, I have just received the school supply list for my rising 3rd grader for the AAP. I saw that calculator is on the list. What do kids use their calculators for in 3rd grade?

Doesn't sound like a good idea...but maybe they use it to check their work for 2 digit multiplication? I personally wouldn't encourage kids to rely on calculators so early b/c the speed of getting the answer is just too tempting. Our AAP didn't have that on the supply list.

My 4th AAP child did not have calulator on supply list last year.

they use it for the number1134 upside-down followed by giggles. It is part of the humor for the parental referral.

I proudly taught my fellow 6th graders how to use the memory key to make a calculator say "hello boobless."

My AAP child didn't use a calculator until 6th grade. I'm not sure what they'd need it for in 3rd grade.

I never used a calculator till I started college. We turned out to be human calculators by then.

wonder why schools need elementary school kids to use calculators. Foundation in Math out the door!
