Let's talk about Marnie

I am just catching up on season 3 of Girls (up to episode 8 with the Gramercy Hotel scene). I am surprised to find myself on team Marnie! I think Marnie gets a horrible rap just because she's pretty - some kind of underlying sexism going on there, methinks. The other girls are uniformly awful, yet all get passes: Hannah is a sloppy narcissist; Shoshana is an airhead; Jessa is a mess. Marnie may not be as naturally talented as Hannah; extroverted like Jessa; or compelling and focused as Shoshana. Yet she is the only one who is anything approximating a grown-up! And her so-called friends were so rude to her at the beach house. She worked hard to cook and do the flower arrangements and set up a nice time for everyone ... only to be castigated as uptight. I do think Marnie is adrift, but I don't think it's a character flaw! All the characters are or have been adrift; she's the only one who is actively blamed for it at this point. I think that Girls hates her because she is conventional -- but now that I'm a working mom, I guess I have much more admiration for the kind of grit and organization she seems to have. All Marnie really needs is a job! There's nothing wrong with her!

Ehh. She's uptight and has an inflated sense of self she's arrogant. Not criminal, but not perfect. FWIW, I don't fine Hannah as bad as others do either.

I love Girls but usually watch each season 1 year after it aired.
