Parenting -- Special Concerns

Reading some of the posts about one bedroom apartments, I wondered if any single moms would tell me, what is your annual salary and how many children do you have?
One poster mentioned a salary of $18k. How do you afford child care AND a place to live on $18k? Thanks. |
| Mine is not enough in this area. It is about $35K this year thanks to a small annual raise which just covers my rent increase (how convenient!) Plus my son gets about $330 per month in child support. |
| I am the PP. My actual take home salary is about $24K year though. It is possible to live on this but very difficult. I live in a decent apt but the area itself leaves a lot to be desired and the local public school is pretty bad. |

are you in DC, VA or MD?

There was a study that came out a few months ago, saying that a single woman with two kids needed to be making about $67,000 a year to have a minimal standard of living. That's really sad.

| One child still in daycare, live in the VA suburbs, a little over $100K a year, and I still don't think its enough. |
| 3 kids, live in Arlington, HHI is 80,000 before taxes. We have no kind of down payment for a house, so we rent a 3bd house to be near good public schools. We buy all generic groceries these days, never go out to eat and I wear the same clothes I wore 4, 5 years ago. |
I am in VA. My son does qualify for free preschool through Arlington County which is a big help. |
| I make about 43,000 before taxes, have one child that stays with a nanny, live in Bethesda. Definitely not enough for this area, but you know what? You just gotta make it through. Whether it's 18k or 100k, there's always gonna be financial struggles. So you just gotta be a creative with spending and saving as you can. |
| PP--Please forgive me for asking, but how do you pay for a nanny on $43K? It seems like that's what most nannies expect to be paid themselves. Just curious. |
| I have two kids, made around $75K this year and it was not enough to put anything in the bank or even cover all of our expenses plus taxes (I'm freelance). I technically get child support but haven't seen a check in seven months. We rent a small house in a good neighborhood, could afford as many groceries as we needed for a while and also preschool, but I just lost two thirds of my income and have no idea what will happen next. |

Im the 18k mom
well it sucks and I dont have enough to pay everything so I "rob peter and pay paul so to speak" and make it work we have the absolute minimum of everything and no extras what else can I do ? |
|
I make 80k pre tax. But with two kids in daycare, rent and a car payment, that leave me living off of about $1000 a month for utilities, food, medical co pays, etc. And yes I realize how lucky I am to have that much!

$65K, one kid. We do OK.
When I left his dad I made about $30K |
More power to you. I do hope that you get some sort of breaks, though. Free preschool, subsidized housing, etc. |
