Breeder for Toy Poodles

Anonymous
Husband and son have dog allergies. Standard poodle recently passed. Want a much smaller dog, but can't seem to locate a good place to buy a toy poodle. All places appear to be puppy mills. Want a good tempered dog as we have 2 ES kids. Loved, loved, loved our standard poodle and hope to find another even tempered dog. HELP!!

A toy poodle and a standard poodle are almost like two different breeds. Depending on what you liked about your standard, a toy probably won't have it.

I disagree. I've had both. Standards require a lot more exercise and toys can be more high-strung, but their core traits are the same: smart, non-shedding, loving, great with children.

I've had both, too. The six toy poodles versus the three standards were much more high-strung, yippie, lots more health problems, they were much more like the stereotypical little dog than they were like a standard.

I know a breeder. My mom has two. This breeder carefully screens applicants. About a 3.5 hour drive

This is so true.

There are definitely toy poodles from time to time at rescues. I think I've seem them at the Fairfax County animal rescue and if you want reeeally small teacup size, I think Lost Dog had one listed. You could put out the word at the various rescues and follow their listings and you will definitely find adult poodles, but maybe even eventually a puppy if that's what you want.

What about a miniature poodle? I think toy poodles are annoying. We have a standard poodle now, and he is great.

Please think about adopting....until all of the shelters are empty

When you buy from a breeder, a shelter dog dies or is turned over to a lab for experimentation (true -- most rural shelters in this region participate in pound-seizure). There are poodle rescue groups that adopt out all the time.

Get a rescue dog. STOP breeding!!

Your mom needs to stop breeding. There are perfectly good dogs that are KILLED everyday. Have a fucking conscience.

Don't breed of buy while shelter animals die.

Please go onto Petfinder.com, adoptapet.com etc. You will be surprised at how many poodle/mixes are available. We are in the process of getting pre-approved for a purebred dog from a breed specific rescue and the process has been really easy.
