Work Samples - Meeting with AART

Anonymous
I met with our AART on Monday to look at my child's file. I have to say I was very disappointed with the work samples the school selected. My child did get a very high GBRS and is in the pool, so I am not writing this because I'm thinking he won't be offered placement. I am only saying it for future parents for appeals or for next year that you may want to send in your own work samples, which we thankfully did.

What was your child's GBRS? how were the commentaries?

16 and excellent. (I was very surprised it was that high, to be honest). I am only stating that the work samples, to me, were weak and if the school thinks those are the best he can do, well that's pretty sad. I'm NOT saying my kid is a genius, but I do not think the work samples accurately reflect a snapshot of him. Nothing unique or interesting about them except for maybe one of the few pieces.

The school can turn in TWO pieces- so how can "one of the few pieces" be good?

There were front and backs. The front of one piece was answering some questions. That was very blah - one sentence answers. The back of that pages was a story. Then there was a front and back on another sheet. The two pages contained FOUR different samples, just copied so they covered two pages.

Interesting. I don't think parents can do front and back when submitting work samples. It's good in a way they can give more than just 2. Seemed odd that parents could submit more than the school.

Parents can do front and back, per our AART. When I met with the AART on Monday to go over the file, the entire file was front to back.

In the pool + GBRS of 16.
It doesn't matter what pieces of work are selected. Even if they were mad scribblings.
The kid is automatically in.

12:09 We were told each work sample was to be on 8 1/2 x 11 paper but could include more than one work sample on the front page. They had to fit on the front of the document.

All I can tell you is the file I saw from our AART is that it was front to back, with everything.

I wasn't so sure - because we were in the pool from a single score only.

I just looked at the copy of what I submitted. Our work samples were single sided, but they were also shrunk down. I guess I forgot how I did it. Still, it was front to back in the final copy I saw.

OP, I'm trying to figure out which part of this is the best demonstration that you have WAY too much time on your hands, the fact that you actually made an appt. with the AART? the fact that you actually analyzed and critiqued your child's work samples? Or the fact that you posted it all here like this nonsense matters. I recommend you get a job or a find a hobby. If this is the type of micromanaging you do for an 8 year old, you'll drive yourself crazy by college. Have some faith in your kid and the system. sounds like they'll both do fine on their own.

NP here: I thought the comments were helpful. You need to see someone about your own issues. I prefer a post like this one that actually is honest about her kid's ability (meh samples) versus the 1000s of posts about the Einstein offspring.

I also thought the comments were helpful and also mirror what I saw (was not too impressed by school work samples). My child also got into the pool by one score. And I wasn't sure what his teacher/school thought of him. I know what I see at home, but was he exhibiting these things at school? Seeing the GBRS made me realize that the school DOES see the same things we see.
