flakey, itchy back on dog? What helps?

I have a Havanese -- which is kind of like a Bichon/poodle. It has the same kind of hair but not quite as curly. Anyway, recently she has been scratching her back on EVERYTHING -- rubbing up against the bottom of coffee tables, rubbing her back against people's shoes -- she is does it aggressively, so she obviously itches. Her skin is flakey on her back and a bit red. I put olive oil on it and let it sit for awhile and I am going to try to bathe her in an all natural shampoo.

Her skin seems more irritated when she comes home from the groomer, even tho they say they use "hypoallergenic" shampoo.

The vet gave us a spray that was like a moisturizer but it did not work well. She is also on herbs from a holistic doctor for her bowels and they help a lot with that issue, but maybe they are aggravating her skin? The herbs are called "Relaxed Wonderer". It has helped her bowels significantly, so I hate to stop the herbs!

Any ideas on how to treat this skin issue?

Humidifiers in the house and cod liver oil (drizzled over his food) helped our dog quite a bit.

Try vest online. They helped my dog when she had this problem. Odd that the expensive vet down the street from us did not figure it out. (My dog had a serious problem with different symptoms --did not want to scare you) Is probably something simple.

Continue with the olive oil, and likely find another groomer if this one won't try a different shampoo.

You could also try a food meant for dogs with sensitive skin. Mix it with her regular food to start with.

Our dog started getting dry flaky skin last fall, we added this salmon oil to his food and his skin was no longer flaky after a couple weeks. We also changed his food to Wellness Core.

What are you feeding him? Many dogs can develop allergies to different ingredients (especially common: corn, wheat, grains) It would definitely be worth adding some fish oil to his diet in the meantime to help with his skin.
