Planning to refer if DC doesn't get into pool?

I'm just curious. Years ago, most parents wouldn't have bothered. If you would self-refer in the absence of pool scores or teacher recommendation, what are your reasons?

The people I've known personally who referred did it because their children scored just a point or so below the cutoff and overall their behavior seemed to indicate they needed the program. It makes sense to refer when the child just barely misses the cutoff score; it doesn't make a lot of sense to refer when the child's scores are not very close.

The OP stated "in the absence of pool scores." I suppose that could be read as not meeting the cutoff or not receiving the scores yet.

We will not refer if child (our oldest) is not in the pool. We have an excellent elementary school (at least we think we do!) and believe child, who is bright and hardworking but not "gifted", will excel/thrive no matter what track.

I'm struggling with the decision. As her mother, I obviously believe she is very bright. And her grades reflect this - majority 4s, with a couple of 3s especially in the section that involves talking, paying attention, etc. But she really did not do well on the NNAT. Obviously won't have cogat scores in time to see if she scored higher and the NNAT was a fluke.

I'm glad they've extended the deadline to give me more time to think about it.

What I meant was that the people I know who referred their children who were not in the pool did it because their children just missed the score for the pool. They only missed being in the pool by a few points at most, so the parents felt it made sense to refer. It doesn't make sense to refer when the scores are not even close to the required score.

Yes, unless the scores come back low (more than a point or two off).

The reason I will is because every teacher since kindergarten has been talking about child needing to go to the center. At conferences last fall, the second grade teacher told us she was putting together a file together to put with the child's referral packet.

We are okay either way as we have children at both the base school and center school and know that the base school is quite good and has its own plusses, just as the center does.

The child will do well at either school, but will likely thrive at center based on what we have seen of the program, so we want to make sure that option is available should we choose to use it.
