Anyone done a princess party?

I'm thinking about a princess theme for DDs 5th birthday party. I saw on another thread that you can hire a princess to come to the party as entertainment. I'm wondering what I'm supposed to tell my daughter about who that person actually is. Do I just pretend she's a real princess? If my daughter asks, which she very well might, where the princess is from (we've had many conversations about how the US doesn't have royalty) what do I say? Same question for hiring a princess dressed up like a specific Disney princess: do I just pretend it actually IS Belle or whoever? She has friends who have gone to Disneyworld and she sort of thinks the princesses live there. (She does not question why so many princesses would want to move to Florida! Nor does she question why they live in the US at all if the US doesn't have royalty.)

At 5 will she just suspend disbelief if I hire a princess? Am I better off getting a generic one instead of a Disney character? Also interested in specific recommendations and experiences. Thanks!

My mother's godmother was a Princess, Belgium version. Your DD's turning 5. Please do not pretend to her that a real princess has visited! The last thing girls need is to think that real live princesses walk about in ball gowns and crown jewels.

Just... don't say anything. I'm sure she will be very happy with her party, and will understand that there is a suspension of disbelief. If she's particularly enamored of a specific princess character, hire a person wearing that costume. If not, generic is fine!

Are you having afternoon tea, with fancy teacups and little sandwiches and tiny scones and jam tarts and stuff? Ooh, yummy! Looking forward to doing this with DD, older DS wasn't exactly in that vibe

Have fun!

We just did it this past weekend for our 5 year old twins. We hired an impersonator (Cinderella). She was FANTASTIC. Better than I had even imagined. My kids didn't ask about whether she was "real" or not, and neither did the rest of their guests. The Cinderella did handle one question about where she lived and how she got there very skillfully and with so much grace and tact. I was so impressed. I don't remember exactly what she said, but she didn't lie, but answered in a whimsical/turn the question around on you kind of way.

My kids and their friends have declared that it was the best party ever. I say go for it!

Oh and I used Princess Parties by Heidi. This is the website:

They were very accomodating and the whole arrangement was low stress. Cinderella handled our entire party and could sing like you would not believe. The kids were mesmorized.

I plan to use them in Dec for my daughter's 5th birthday party (they have a deal going with CertifiKid right now). Glad to know your party turned out well. How long did you book them for? Was thinking of going with the 1 hour party. Do you think that's enough time? When did you have them arrive? Was also considering 2 princesses, but wondering if that will be overload for the guests (only expecting 7-12 guests).

We booked her for 2 hours and I am glad we did. It gave her enough time to read her story, take pictures, do balloon twisting and the crown craft. We did not have enough time for face painting, but honestly, all the other stuff with eating and bathroom breaks sprinkled was more than enough.

Our Cinderella came 30 minutes after the party started and it was a complets surprise--my kids didn't even know she was coming. I would say that you only need one princess, as she was easily able to handle the party on her own. She did a fantastic job of moving the party along and including everyone. (I had 10 children total.)

Not sure what area you are in but Falls Church Target has princess wands for 1.00 they may have been discounted even more as I went Monday afternoon. Would make an awesome party favor.

We did a princess party when DD turned 4 and we had a puppet show of princess and the frog and rapunzel. We also frosted cookies in crazy colors and the girls wore costumes. Everyone got a crown.

We went to a princess (and knight) party, and it was sweet. My son dressed up like a knight, and the girls mostly wore disney dresses. Not my style, but the kids had fun! They were all pretty enthralled by whatever princess came - she read a story and took pictures and hung out a bit.

2 hours? Wow. How long did your party last? I'm planning a 2 hour party, allowing time at the beginning for an activity (to allow time for guests to arrive and bridge the time gap of when the princess arrives) and time at the end for eating, cake, wind-down.

My daughter has requested Tiana and Belle (really would have preferred Rapunzel, but it's her choice!). Now I'm wondering if I should have her pick just one (and I know she'll pick Tiana!). Decisions, decisions....

Thanks for the great feedback!
