How many essays for TJ admission for semifinalist

Anonymous
Did anyone gather from TJ open house on Saturday how many essays do TJ semifinalists will have to write?

TJ semifinalists will have to complete/write the SIS form which consists of 7 - 8 shorter questions (3 to 4 sentences) and 1 longer question (6 to 9 sentences) in a "controlled setting".

The semifinalist would have already written 2 longer essays at the time of the TJ Exam in addition to the Verbal/Math tests.

It's my understanding that the SIS and 2 essays are administered after the 1st round.

The Student Information Sheet

All semifinalists must complete the Student Information Sheet (SIS) portion of the admissions process. The Student Information Sheet, or SIS, will be administered in a controlled setting at fifteen school sites (12 in Fairfax County and one each in Arlington, Loudoun, and Prince William counties). Click here for a listing of school sites. Semifinalists will complete the SIS at the same site they were assigned to take the December 2013 admissions test.

For information on preparing for the Student Information Sheet, including sample questions, click here.

The Essays

After a ten-minute break, semifinalists will have one hour to write two essays in response to two different essay questions. One essay question focuses on real-world problem solving, often with an ethical component. The other essay question focuses on self-assessment by the student.

It was way too easy last year.

FCAG quotes FCPS as follows:

http://fcag.org/documents/tj/Status%20of%20FCAG%20Recommendations%20on%20TJ%20Admissions%20Changes%209-18-13.pdf

FCAG Proposal
Make the math portion of the TJ test tougher, and include questions with serious algebraic thinking.

FCPS Response
Evan Glazer (Principal of TJ), Jeremy Shughart (Director of TJ Admissions), and Craig Herring (Director in Instructional Services) have been working with the testing company to increase the number of problems that would require more problem solving and math reasoning abilities. We have given the testing company examples of the types of questions we would want.

I don't think FCPS said they will implement the new math test beginning this year.

The admissions folks have repeatedly stated that what they present is as of the day they present and much is subject to change for this admissions round.

Is the Date for SIS and Essays on Saturday january 25th or Sunday January 26th ? Anyone know what time exactly ?

And what if you made the semi finalist but can't do the SIS and essay on that date, is there an alternate date/time ?

Please advise.

Thanks in advance.

Regards.

Try calling the TJ admissions office. They would know the specifics, especially since there have been a lot of changes this year.
