I just received a job offer and I'm anxious to give notice. I've been with the company 2 years and manage a few entry-level employees.
Problem is my boss is out of town on a biz trip and won't return until Monday. Should I wait until she gets back and give my 3 weeks on person or call her with the news? |
Wait until Monday |
I would call now since it's Tuesday. Your new job can't start until your 2/3 weeks at your current job is up.
I'm in a similar situation and I'm going to be emailing and calling so there's a record and she can't keep me past my 2 weeks. |
Wait until he comes back. |
I'd do it now. I'm sure your boss would prefer knowing sooner.

Now. I was just in this situation as well. |
Depends on when you will be starting with the new job and whether you want any time in between. Two weeks notice is standard. If the new job starts 9/30 and you don't care about time off, waiting til Monday will be fine. If you need to start the new job sooner and/or want some time off in between, go ahead and call now.
I would probably feel more comfortable doing it in person. I think you'd typically come in with a written resignation letter as well. |
OP here. I actually don't start my new job until Nov 1 so waiting until Monday is okay (tho of course I would like as much of a break as possible). I was just thinking she might want to get as much of a jump on finding my replacement. |
I'd wait until she gets back, if for no other reason than that people traveling on business need to be focused on the reason for their travel. If I gave my boss notice while he was traveling for a deposition or something and he had to consider how to fill my position/who would take over my responsibilities/etc., it's possible that his mind would not be 100% on the deposition. Note: I am absolutely not so important that I believe my resignation would tank a deposition, but people have any number of distractions and I'd be going out of my way not to be one of them.
If it does not matter if you wait until Monday, just wait until Monday. |
In this case, I would wait until Monday. If she's on a business trip, presumably she won't have time to start recruiting anyway. A few days aren't going to make a difference at this point. |
Monday. |
OP here - new panic. I decided to wait until Monday but now I'm afraid she'll somehow hear through the grapevine. Jobs are in totally different industries but you know how small circles can be...
Which is worse - being told over phone while on business or the chance of hearing it from someone else! |
Will they show you the door the day you resign? |
Monday |
OP here - I doubt it. |
