| I am not religious. Was not brought up in a religious home, however my husband is Jewish (also not religious). My parents are Moslem (dad) and Catholic (mom). As much as we say we dont want to brig religion into our new babies life...it is something we are starting to talk about more or at least being open to. It is easy in that there is no pressure, neither of us comes from religious families. I have ordered a few books to "enlighten" myself but when you think of these three religions, what commonality is there off the bat aside from the spirituality component? |
| Off the top of my head - monotheism. |
| Abraham. All of these religions trace back to Abraham. |
| Food. |
| God, doing good unto others, honesty and morality. |
|
God as Creator. The devotion of Shia and Sufi Muslims to saints has some similarities to Catholic devotion to saints (Sunnis of course do not approve of this facet of Shia and Sufi Islam). Importance of family. Feasts and fasts. Jews and Muslims (Muslims to varying degrees depending on the sect) do not like graven images.
All religions have something in common - search for meaning beyond the superficial ebb and flow of human life. |
| Lots of made up stories designed to instill moral values and a common culture. |
| Holy Wars. |
| A lot of the stories. Adam and Eve. Abraham. The story, for the most part, of Mary and Jesus (for Islam and Catholicism) |
| They are all called Abrahamic Religions because all stem from Abraham the Patriarch. Abraham's son Ishmael (by Hagar) was the descendant through whom Islam comes. Isaac is the descendant through whom Judaism (and by extension, Christianity) comes. |
|
One God.
In all religions, you will find a common thread of "do unto others, as you would have them do unto you." You could start here, The Charter for Compassion. A project by Karen Armstrong.. http://charterforcompassion.org/the-charter/#charter-for-compassion |
| Why just mention Catholicism? Why didn't you just say Christianity? Lol |
Not OP, but the spectrum of Christian religions is very different when you go from Catholicism to mega churches to Evangelicals to Mormons etc. Catholicism is also much older than all other Christian denominations. |
Not really, there were Christian Churches before the Catholic Church and there have always been offshoots. Of course it depends on when you view the Catholic Church beginning. |
I have never been to equate Christianity with monotheism. It is sort of like the echidna or platypus classified as mammals- sort kinda fits, but at the same time - not really. Trinitarian = 3 Mono = 1. |
