How is your school's MS/US math program?

I've also heard parents lament about how many public schools (and not necessarily great ones) seem to have stronger math programs than many private schools. At first I thought it was a joke, but after hearing many stories, I'm not so sure anymore....

This might have to do with fewer families of scientists (math types) at private schools.

It would be great if the pp could clarify her (his) statement - not sure what you mean. Strong math and science departments have always been the benchmark of great schools. Many of the top colleges in the country seek out these students - it is one of the very best ways to get into these schools.

But it does not seem to be the interest of the private schools. The science types seem to come out of the public schools. The private do a spectacular jib with writing and so on. Makes good lawyers.

I came across this link that others might find interesting. http://www.unl.edu/amc/d-publication/d1-pubarchive/2006-7pub/2007-1012Summary.pdf The private schools seem to do pretty well in light of their small class sizes.

I will say that schools like Harvard, Princeton and several of the 7 Sisters really focus on the science and math grads. If you look at many of the most prestigious colleges and universities out there, they have very strong science programs so they are looking for kids with similar strong backgrounds.

Ny nephew graduated from Landon with a science focus and had every Ivy, MIT, Stanford, U of MI, and many CA universities battling over him. He ended up choosing Harvard.

Ironically, some articles out recently that show that with the economy as it is now, strictly liberal arts colleges are overall falling out of favor with families.
