Thoughts on Glenarden Woods?

Anonymous
This is my daughters first year at Glenarden Woods ES and she likes it. The work can get crazy at times with projects but it is not overwhelming to us. As a parent the transition from private to public overall has not been a let down. It was a small adjustment but i have no regrets. In 5th grade we will have to look for middle school options unfortunately but we will be at Glenarden Woods ES until then.

Your child will automatically matriculate to Greenbekt Middle's TAG program. This is my son's last year at Greeneblt Middle, and it has been a very good experience for him. I'm the PP from way back who's kid did 5th grade at Glenarden Woods.

I believe that some of the Glenarden Woods kids get sent to Kenmoor. It depends on where you live. But the principle is the same. TAG ES kids automatically get into TAG MS.

Bump.
Our child had been accepted for the fall and we've been debating since he's in a great specialty program now but GWES could be the challenge that he needs. I've seen many posts about the homework and workload but can anyone talk about the curriculum itself and what they are learning? Is it advanced work plus creative thinking models? Any input is greatly welcome.

I know some kids in GWES take 6th grade math in 5th grade.

Bump. Does anyone have more recent information?

My son has just complete 5 th grade at GWES. Third grade was really hard for our whole family. There was a lots of homework and projects outside of school.
Fourth and fifth grade were much easier for the whole family. Less homework. Same projects. I recommend GWES.

Hmm. Why do you recommend it? Homework for kids that young does not really sound so great!

Hi, can anyone speak to the likelihood of getting into GW after the 1st grade? If the child tests in at 3rd grade, what is the likelihood of getting into the school in 4th grade? Are there any other opportunities?

My 2e daughter had a breakdown due to her experiences at this school. It is not designed for gifted kids (who tend to have uneven areas of strength). Rather, the school is designed for high achieving kids who excel in all areas and can handle demanding workloads (2+ hours of homework a night), lots of seatwork, and have strong enough organization skills to navigate many teachers, most of whom are overworked and chronically disorganized. Teachers rarely responded to my questions and appeared to have rather surprising knowledge gaps. Overall our experience was pretty terrible. In hindsight my daughter would have been better off having remained in her neighborhood school.
