how do we feel about brick fireplaces?

Anonymous
Our 1950s house had an ugly red brick fireplace - it looked dated and cheap. We worried about painting it, but we did and it looks amazing. We painted it black, and it makes the white woodwork mantel (which unlike the brick is of high quality) really stand out. Most of the homes in our neighborhood have painted fireplaces - especially the ones that have had additions or upgrades.

Can't stand red brick fireplaces, I think it's very dated, not classic. We did have ours tiled with marble.

Which will look dated any day now. (Although if you love remodeling, that's great. Opportunity!)
