BASIS Elementary Expansion - What's the latest?

Clueless PreK and early elementary school parents with no prior experience with DCPS will yes sign up for Basis elementary school.

It's also insane to give them middle school children and absurd to give them high school children.

They brag about how many kids wash out -- if 80 percent of the kids can't make it, you're running the school the wrong way!

Why do you care what other people do with their kids? Are you worry about the impact on your DCPS school? Work to make your school better, a good DCPS school doesn’t have to work too hard to recruit students.

Because each and every school impacts the functioning of the system as a whole. And because I feel bad for kids when their parents make doofus decisions.

Are you kidding me…there are SO many (perhaps too many) elementary charter and DCPS school choices in this neighborhood that it makes it so difficult to build a sense of community. On my block alone, we have Two Rivers, SWS, JO Wilson, Ludlow, CHML, Mundo, Stokes, Yu Ying, etc families. That’s not even including MS, HS or private schools. It’s already bananas! There is no need for this here!

We build a sense of community by being on the same block. It doesn't matter that our kids are all at different schools.

+1, what a ridiculous argument. So public school parents in DC should just be silent on all school issues that don't involve their specific school? Of course the introduction of a new charter will have an impact on both nearby DCPS and nearby charters (and has been explained, the proposed location is very close to not only two boundary DCPS schools, but a charter and an all-city DCPS). It's totally reasonable for parents to ask if that makes sense and to argue that the new charter could eat into the enrollment at those four other schools.

And yes, I think it's totally reasonable to ask if a BASIS elementary would serve kids in the city, regardless of whether you plan to send a kid there or the school will be in your neighborhood. I really do not think BASIS-style education lends itself to PK-5th, but especially early childhood education, where I think there needs to be a strong focus on socio-emotional issues.

Pp is talking about the parents not the school. You can ask as many questions as you want, but stop judging other parent’s decisions, because you are afraid that your school will be affected.

No skin in this game, my kid is in upper elementary but bring it on if Basis wants to come. We need better and higher standards than the equity race to the bottom that is DCPS.

it's all part of the spiel... they act like it shows how rigorous the education is. It doesn't. It shows how inappropriate the education is. These people shouldn't be getting tax dollars.

DP. There is no spiel about kids washing out. And 80% of the student do not fail. You know that, which is why you ignored PP asking for a source.

We get you have an ax to grind, but at least try to be a little less transparent about it.

Don’t waste your breath.

The Basis haters gnash their teeth but the school just gets stronger every year.

Dumb take.

There are 59 BASIS schools around the world. In the US, many of the BASIS schools are ranked among the top in the country.

Of those 59 schools, only ONE does not have K-4. That is BASIS DC.

Plus, BASIS DC middle school is already ranked #1 among public schools in DC and is ranked the #1 charter school.

So, no, I don't think adding a K-4 option will "ruin" BASIS DC.

No problem with BASIS opening k-4. But PRE-K?? Got a lot of questions about how they intend to run that.

Good news then. They aren't! Now you can worry about more important things like asteroids hitting earth or getting eaten by a killer whale.
