| My 14-month old is quite congested, but fights me if I try to clear out his nose. How can I teach him to "blow"? |
| Good luck. My 3 yo still won't blow his nose. My mom says I was the same way. One of my friend's kids, on the other hand, was blowing her nose at 18 mos. I'm interested to see what responses you get.... |

We bunched up a bit of tissue and stuck it in our two year old's nostril (make sure it's long enough that the whole thing can't be inhaled!). The plug up the other nostril and instructed for him to blow it out. That taught him the idea of blowing his nose out.
Good luck. |
| We taught our 16 month old by showing him daddy blowing his nose. We then kinda pinched baby's nose and he just blew. |

Teach them how to blow bubbles with their noses in the water, for example while taking a bath or in a bowl of water. They are likely to get some water in their nose like that and it will not be fun, but they will understand how to blow out.
Another one: lay back on the floor, put one tissue over your face and blow with your nose so the tissue will fly up. Have your toddler do the same. Then practice with blowing while you hold the tissue and pinch their nose. |
| I told mine to first blow through the mouth, then to try blowing through the nose - so they can feel the difference. Then I hold the tissue to their nose, hold one nostril down and tell them to blow hard through their nose again. I do that twice on each side. Although, they do have a harder time doing it without me holding their nostril. |
| Honestly, I can't say we tried any particular technique with DD other then to tell her to blow and showed her how Mommy and Daddy blow. We started this many, many months ago and now at just-turned-two she blows into a tissue we hold for her quite well. I'd just say it's one of those practice makes, sort of, perfect kind of things. Good luck. |
brilliant! I'm not the OP, but I LOVE this idea! |
