Ovulating on day 16 of a 25 day cycle - is that ok?

Anonymous
I had a miscarriage and D&C in January. Got my first period about 4 weeks after which was horrible - very heavy and lumpy. My hormone levels returned to normal after the period, though. I'm desperate to conceive again so starting charting using an OPK - which I'd never done before. I ovulated on day 16 (same as the month I conceived before), but then my next period started on day 23 (brown spotting) moving to heavy bleeding on day 25.

Is that normal? I'm worried that my cycle is too short, and that any egg won't have a chance to stick /the hormone levels won't get high enough before my period starts. I'd be really grateful for any advice/information - it's such a nightmare getting an OBGYN appointment and I'm not sure who else to ask.

Your LP phase was probably too short for a fertilized egg to implant this cycle. However, I wouldn't worry. Your body was most likely still working its way through your miscarriage. You already know that your LP phase can be long enough for an egg to implant. Wait and see what happens for the next few cycles.

Sorry for your loss OP.

It is likely your luteal phase is on the shorter end, but you won't know if this is a new pattern or just a one-time thing until you keep going. Keep charting, temping, etc. and see what happens. It might take a few (maddening) months for your body to get back to normal; I know it has for me.

I started acupuncture with the goal to support fertility after my D & C last summer and it lengthened my cycles from 24/25 days to 27/28 days in just a few months. I'd highly suggest you look into it. Good luck.

For an RE, the brown spotting counts as first day of your period. So the luteal phase is too short. You may need progesterone, if your cycles continue like that. And you may benefit, depending on your situAtion, from a consultation with an RE.

Thanks everyone. My OBGYN said I had to keep trying for 6 months before she'll consider any treatment/intervention, even with the info about my short LP. She said it is very common after a D&C and would likely return to normal 'soon'. But I'm nearly 36 and just want to get on with it! So frustrating.

I would just ask for a progesterone supplement for the 6 months. I can't see why they would refuse to give you the prescription. Why waste 6 months if what is really at issue is just a progesterone deficiency? That seems so silly. FWIW, I had a short luteal phase and got pregnant my first month on progesterone supplements.
