Ok, so I'm a renovation newbie. We are considering buying a home in Silver Spring that has pretty decent space, about 2500 sqft, but is so aesthetically dated that it hurts to look at it. We'd ideally like to knock down a wall here or there to make things a bit more open, perhaps add on a sun room or large porch, and update all of the finishes. Fortunately, the home is cheap enough that we'd have about $200k to put into renovations. Am I even remotely in the ballpark? Is $200k a lot for a renovation or is it peanuts?
And yes, we're going to have an architect and contractor walk through with us before we put in a bid. But I'd be interested to hear some feedback here first. |

You can do a lot with the money if you plan carefully and shop well.
I just added a two story 750 sq ft addition with a full bath for much less than that. |

They are fantastic and work in the MD-VA-DC area. Quality work, materials and so easy to work with. |
| For $200k you could build a new house. That is a big renovation. If you are looking at things like moving partition walls, updating a kitchen and bath (not using high end finishes and expensive applicances), maybe new floors, some paint, replace windows, new heat/AC if it's an average size house without significant issues half of that shoudl be plenty. If you are taking everything down to the studs and rebuilding with high end finishes you could spend $200k or more. |
| For 200K, think what you could do to your spouse! |
