What is considered "oversized electronics" in checked luggage?

Anonymous
I just read that I shouldnt put oversized electronics in checked luggage, but what does that include?

I wanted to pack a portable nebulizer for my son's asthma. That's not too big - 4x6x2 inches or so. And a little round iPod dock/speaker thing to play music when I get there. That's a little bigger, maybe 8 inches in diameter.

Are these too big? Should I put them in carryon instead? Which I don't want to do - I'm trying to travel lightly.

TSA says that because your checked bags will have to be manually opened when the electronics show up on xray, which costs them time and money.

But I think the real risk is that electronics tend to disappear in transit.

Probably not a risk with the nebulizer, but the iPod deck could walk off. I'd put that in your carry on.
