Please recommend good action-oriented PS3 games for 12 year old

My son is begging for M-rated games like Call of Duty. I won't get them, but I'm wondering if there are good alternatives that are appropriate for a 12 year old but contain enough action to hold his interest?

Portal! It's a super-fun, clever game where you have a gun that shoots portals in walls (so you can go in one and out the other -- interdimensionally). The main character is even a woman! It's so not your typical game.

Lest your son think it's "lame" because of that, Portal is much beloved in the gamer community and is considered one of the top games of the decade.
