Elementary School-Aged Kids
| My son is 15. He is too old for most local camps. He is going to sleep away camp for two weeks and visiting out of town friends for two weeks, but that leaves many weeks this summer with nothing to do ( but tv and video games). Any ideas? |
| Mine is doing drivers ed for 2 weeks. Also sports camp/pre season sports for school for 4 weeks. Working on SSL hours (if you are in MoCo there is a whole list of SSL opportunities including some camp counseling). Working on some home projects (painting a fence, etc.). |
| I echo the SSL/volunteer activities. My teen daughter is doing 4 weeks of counselor in training in the mornings. She's not thrilled, but will have her afternoons free, so it's a compromise. Unfortunately, Montgomery County requires training sessions for CITs, and I think they're all over. |
| I'm in same boat with two 15 yo boys. Is drivers Ed anoption before they are old enough for a permit? I take away the tv remote and the xbox remote and the computer mouse every morning and don't get them out till 8 pm. I may have to take away the phones too. Ugh. They are just not motivated to do anything. |
In MD you can do the classroom portion of drivers ed before they have a permit. That is what my DS is doing. He will take Drivers Ed in August but wont be old enough for a permit until November. Once he has his permit he can do the behind the wheel sessions. |
| How about some household chores for allowance? |
| NP here. Is this all we can come up with? I need ideas, too. |
| My 15 year old is going to be a CIT for 4 weeks at the Bethesda YMCA. |

14 year old DD is doing CIT at a camp she used to go to.
I guess the message for all parents of younger kids is get them to like a camp they can do CIT at later.... |

| If he's interested in science, TJ has some camps. Last year my DS did "Mythbusters" and had a blast. |

Summer job?
Volunteering? Working at camps? helping around the house? All good options. I don't think vegging and hanging with friends (as long as they are good friends) is necessarily such a bad thing either. Soon they will be working and in the rat race with little time off - adolescence is the last time you get to have fun lazy summers. |
