Easiest method to determine proper portion sizes?

it is obvious bathing suit weather is here with the many diet posts and I, too, am looking for some new ways to lose weight for the long term. Our issue is not junk and snacks, but general portion size control. i have a scale, but dont know where to start with portions? what is the easiest guide to tape on the wall for DH and I to refer to?
