Purses kill my shoulder - solutions?

Anonymous
Whenever I have more than a wallet and a cell phone in my (already light-weight) purse, my shoulder aches for days. I guess I need a backpack, or some other alternative.

Any ideas? I can't afford more than about $60, and I would like something that doesn't look like I'm on my way to 6th period English.

What about a crossbody bag where the weight is more evenly distributed? Zappo's has tons.

I had this and just bought smaller bags that limit how much I can put in.

I just use a wristlet. Money, DL, debit, credit cards, phone, clip keys to it. All my other random cards stay in the car for when I need them.

Guess I should mention that I live and work in the city. So leaving things in the car or just carrying less isn't an option. An average workday means lugging around metro reading, lunch, whatever purchases I made during the day, whatever work I'm taking to/from the office, a bottle of wine if I'm going to a friend's house... and so on.

An average weekend day, when I'm with my daughter, add a drink and a snack, and an extra sweater.

I've never bought anything from zappos. Their selection is TOO big. For example, I just searched "cross body" and got over 3000 results. Of all the ways you can narrow the search, "size" is not one of them. How do you tell how big these things are, without clicking on each and every one?

For years I've been using nothing but the Ameribag Healthy Back Bag linked above as my everyday bag to cart to and from work on the metro. It's not the most stylish/trendy, but its "attractive" enough for me, especially given the comfort it provides. They have large and medium sizes. Even in the medium size I can usually put my iPod, my Kindle, my wallet, and even my lunch if it's a small package, with assorted other stuff in the various pockets (cell phone, small umbrella, makeup, etc.) and it still feels light and comfortable. The large one accommodates a lot of stuff before it starts feeling a little heavy. I started using it years ago, when I was having serious arm and shoulder issues and it made all the difference to me.

More geek-chic than fashionable, but I like crossover bags with wide nylon webbing straps, like these Brooklyn Industries mini-messenger bags: http://www.brooklynindustries.com/bags-messenger-bags/small-messenger3
Here's one with the wide strap that's more purse-shaped, although I don't think the strap gets long enough for cross-over use: http://www.brooklynindustries.com/bags-handbags/margarite-hobo-2011

Patagonia makes a cross body sling pack that is small and light with a wide weight-bearing strap. They have an ultra light version, too.
