Adoption and Asian Family Events coming up

Anonymous
There are a couple conferences on adoption coming up in the next couple of months and lots of family events concerning Asian culture, which are good for any family.

I have been to a Barker conference in the past and it was really well done. If you are thinking about adoption, a conference is a good thing to go to. As for events concerning Asian Culture, they look like lots of fun for the entire family.

Aw, this is a great resource, thanks! DH is Asian, but in the style of many DHs, I'm sure, he is not as knowledgeable about his culture as I am about mine (and heck, I know more about his culture's food and celebrations just from researching them to make him feel at home). I hope it's ok to use this website even if I'm just a white mom trying to provide half-Asian DD with more connection to her ancestry.

Once again, thanks for the link.

Please spread around the web site. I would love to get input on events/ news of interest to Asian families and adoptive families. I keep the web site updated as I find things of interest.

Awesome! Thanks for posting this.

Have you been to any of the cultural events? My husband is American-born with immigrant parents from China, and I am white. Husband is from SF, and we went to a Chinese New Year event last month and were sorely disappointed. It was little more than an poorly presented elementary school fair.

This is a listing of all of the Lunar New Years Events, I found. Obviously I have not been to many of them. We have been to the Lion Dances performed by the Chinese Youth Club, at least 3 or 4 times. We always enjoy that. We went to the Vietnamese Lunar New Year event in McLean and that wasn't much more than commercial stuff. But my child enjoyed it, we met some friends there and I was able to buy some Vietnamese paintings.

I've heard good things about the Events at Lakeforest Mall. I think the events at libraries are family events put on by local Chinese schools, I hope to get to some next year. And a couple of years ago we went to the parade in Chinatown. We have been working around naps many of the times haven't worked for a toddler. Some of these events are ways that children can show off what they have learned in class at their Chinese Schools. The more professional groups will be at the bigger events. I'm sure in another 5 years I will be able to review many more of them.

I suspect anything done in San Francisco will be bigger and better than here, but if you lower your expectations and go to a few more events, then you might have some fun.

I went to the Fiesta Asia Street Fair last year and the performances were excellent, sort of a smaller version of the one they have downtown. I expect the one downtown in May will be pretty good.

I have also been to the Asian Fair in Reston and enjoyed that. It was very well organized, lots of performances and places to buy things. I will post when I hear of a date. But again I have to warn you these events are free (or nearly so) and you are not going to find performances that are ready for the stage at the Kennedy Center at the events.

I don't get the relation between adoption and Asian culture?

It is a website of resources for families with children adopted from Asia. Parents are interested in adoption and Asian culture. I post both Adoption events and Asian Cultural events and have many pages on either adoption information or cultural links.

Many Caucasian families have adopted Asian children, so families go out of their way to attend Asian events and we are also interested in adoption events.

Obviously Asian families are also interested in Asian Events. And there may be some Asian families interested in adoption too.

The Cultural Events that I post are not open to Asian families only, many families would enjoy these cultural events.

I created the facebook page in response to a reader who wanted to get email updates of events. Facebook seemed like an easy way to go. The facebook page is public, but if you want the messages to appear on your news feed you must "like" it. Sorry didn't make a like button, you have to go to the page and like it.

Well, I found a couple of summer camps which don't qualify as "culture camps". There is a link on the home page. I have updated the blog.
I also had a friend who is a guest blogger.

I put most of the "news" on facebook now, so "Like" http://www.facebook.com/MyAsianKidDC and you can get them on your news feed.
I update the events page a couple of times a week when I find stuff. I would love if people would send me stuff (go to contact page)

May was "Asian American Pacific Island Heritage month so there were tons of events last month. There are not so many events in June, but there are still events.

There is a link on the news page if you want to read about adoption in the news. Another website compiles those.
