Private & Independent Schools
| Others suggested schools that did a better job of diversity, what was wrong with my suggesting Beauvoir? I don't even have a child there. |
This is why I am so glad I did just what I did and walked right out of the place. I dont want my child in an environment with parents like this. I am not say that Sheridan parents are bad but unfortunately you set your own tone. Luckily, a later poster who is a current parent chimmed in to say that the school does lack diversity. It's nothing wrong with that, but it is not the place for some people. A blind person could see that there is a low number of children of color at this school. No one has taken anything away from the educational content, nor the quality of the teachers. There was no "misstatement" in anything written about the school. And the OP said not one word about the hue of the children. And even if that was the case, that would not say a lot for the school- are you saying that they only admit lighter colored African Americans? Don't be so fiery about it, it is what it is. You seem to enjoy your DC school so continue to and support it but at least state the facts. To the OP, if this is a concern for you, as it was for me, then I suggest you continue to look at other schools. This is a difficult process, but believe me you will know your gem when you find it. Luckily I found mine and I could not be happier. My gorgeous, exotic toned DC is thriving well! |
| You're right about CHDS -- they really are serious about diversity. |
| so 21:11 where is this nirvana? you have to share. |
| We are in a diverse upper NW school. Take your pick of which, but you hit the nail on the head when you termed it nirvana. |
|
can you give us a quick run down of what your DC's class looks like? Is it diverse racially and economically? Is there a mix of Asians, whites, hispanics and african americans? How about the staff?
Thanks, I am truly interested. |
| My DC's class of 22 at Sheridan has 6 black children (including one of Ethiopian descent and one of trinidadian descent) a kid with parents from Peru, a kid with parents from Vietnam and a kid with parents from India and Romania. That is pretty darn diverse in my opinion. It is an incredible class who are all supportive of each other. I agree with PP that the staff is very white though. My other dc did pre-primary at lowell and I couldn't believe the rudeness toward adults that was tolerated there so I guess we all come away with our own opinions of these schools. |
Next time, try to be less specific, since you could give too much info. You could say Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, E. Europe, for example. |
You mentioned a child I know. |
| I was wondering about Sheridan's diversity too! I visited and I was amazed that they handed out a book called "Faculty Faces" knowing they have not one lick of diversity in the entire book! That almost made me think they were a bit prideful of their lack of diversity in the faculty! I think academically they are decent, but you have to question why they are so uncommitted to diversity like the other privates in the area! |
| I mean unlike the other privates in the area! |
I am fascinated by this comment. Why does it matter that the PP gave detailed information and that these children might be identifiable to some on this board? The PP is not saying anything negative. She's just stating facts. What's the harm? Honestly, I'm not trying to be snarky; I'm just very curious. |

When children are involved, we try to be as discreet as possible on DCUM. |
