Ease my paranoia - would you feel comfortable moving to an apt where the maintenance closet is

Anonymous
We lived in a pretty high end bldg with the maintenance closet in the entry hall. They only accessed it a few times a year to change filters and gave lots of notice. The hot water heater was in there too. In higher end bldgs that have separate air handlers and water heaters for each unit this closet is common. There is noise but it’s white noise. If it’s a reputable building I wouldn’t be concerned. You can also ask the mgmt to have maintenance show you inside it just to make sure it looks clean and rodent free etc. I am so sorry about your bad experience!

I lived in several appartments like this, and while having that stuff in a bedroom isn’t great, it wouldn’t be a deal breaker. As long as there is anough wall space for whatever you need in the room. But I wouldn’t call that a maintenance closet. Ours was unlocked and I put our grocery cart and tools in there too. They changed the filters twice a year with lots of notice, and I called if I had any problems.

If you are talking about a closet that will need to be accessed more frequently than a couple times a year, I would keep looking.

As long as it isn’t accessed without your knowledge, it wouldn’t bother me.

when you say 'maintenence closet' do you mean the closet with the HVAC unit it it that most apartments have but are locked? I wouldn't worry about it, since it was rarely accessed when I rented, but you shouldn't given your history since you won't have peace of mind about it.
