MDIPA or BCBS..which is more cost efficient for IVF?

Coventry is a much smaller insurance group than MDIPA but I chose it because of their lack of restrictions on the procedure itself. With some insurances, you cannot use donor specimens and must be married.

Wow - now I am confused/concerned. Has this been other MDIPA people's experience? I am with Aetna now but pay only 3500-4000 with ICSI. I was going to switch to MDIPA because the meds were 100 - 200 vs 2 - 3k with Aetna but if MDIPA makes up that cost difference with the higher prices for ICSI I am uncertain....esp since AETNA is open access and is really great about covering everything. If I am reading your post right MDIPA charged you an additional 1600 for ICSI (since they are normally 3500 an IVF cycle). Is this correct? This was through SG?

this was not our experience with MDIPA and we did IVF at SG in 2006 and again in early 2009. Both times, the IVF with ICSI came to just over $4300. I was monitored very closely (stimmed for 14 days and had almost daily ultrasounds for the last 8 days) and I didn't pay more for this. I know that SG sent us an itemized list of customary MDIPA charges that they sent us. maybe you can get the list from them?

In my experience with SG, IVF with MDIPA was very straightforward and we were not surprised at all by any hidden or additional charges.

To the 13:33 poster . . . my insurance is with Coventry, here is what I said in the post " Coventry is a much smaller insurance group than MDIPA"

I chose Coventry Healthcare of Delaware because I am an unmarried heterosexual woman and some insurance plans discriminate based on marital status. Coventry was the only plan for Feds in MD that does not discriminate. Also, a few of the plans do not allow their members to use donor sperm, married or unmarried . . . which really sucks for married women with male factor infertility.

To the OP . . . I do not mean to highjack your tread. Can you order your meds under one insurance during this season and then change for the new year?

Thanks for clarifying! That is good to know and very similar to the cost per cycle I paid with Aetna.
