I don't see how this is possible. |
Why? Cuz you're think that anyone who gets into UVA and W&M would automatically get into Tech? Welcome to the unpredictable world of college admissions decisions. |
Yes USF is harder than UF for its honors college. What a weird comparison. No one goes to WM to study engineering |
Tech engineering is significantly harder to get into than other VT schools. The average GPA is around 4.0 and the average SAT is around 1300; that's slightly below average for UVA and W&M, but it's not inconceivable that someone with those stats could be accepted there and rejected by VT. |
No, it is not. Look at the data yourself. Hit the third option (Applications, Offers, Enrollees): http://www.ir.vt.edu/work_we_do/demo_enroll/admission/studentAdmission.html |
It's true, and not only that UVA & W&M both offered him money and Tech (the general school, not enginering) didn't offer him any. |
We suspect that he didn't get in because he didn't take physics (physics teacher quit that year), although he did take another AP science, and he did not have any extracurriculars that were math or science based. |
The SAT score for engineering students is almost 100 points higher than the average for the school as a whole. Perhaps significantly is overstating it, but it definitely takes better scores to get in. |
U must be joking! |
I thought UVA didn't have merit money? |

Also, the average entering GPA for engineers at Tech is 4.12. Which is what we were told on visiting engineers' day. Said 4.0 or higher. One mom in the room said "HOw do you get a GPA over 4.0?" Silence in the crammed room. Seriously, it's tough to get into Va Tech engineering. |
Interesting. I wondered the same thing then realized that some private schools don't weight grades so you rarely see a 4.0 while public schools do. The Universities know the difference. |
