I think this is harder to do at places like Penn State where it's really difficult to carve out a social niche without being in a sorority or fraternity. |
| I went to a Jesuit school and that's all we did- drink! |
| Op, to tweak your perceptions a bit. There can be a lot of drinking at schools w/out fraternities. But to address your preference for no fraternities, you may not have to look for no fraternities - - if a school has fraternity participation at 8 - 18%, for example, the fraternity-scene will not impact your student significantly. |

I wouldn't look for schools without a Greek system. Your reasoning is flawed, as other PPs have noted.
Look for schools that don't have Greek residence. Many schools have fraternities and sororities but don't have Greek housing except for maybe officers. Look for schools in areas that have a lot to offer outside of campus life. For example, urban schools, or schools in outdoorsy areas like Colorado or parts of California. Conservative schools like Pepperdine might be a good fit, or schools like Belmont in Nashville or trinity. |
| Carnegie mellon? |
Only 17% of men and 19% of women are a part of Greek life at Penn State... |
| Would you consider a Christian college? I went to a very small one, and there were many international students and lots of opportunities to do multicultural things. There is also less drinking, though it Still exists on any campus. I am not recommending Liberty, for the record. |
Totally agree (for example, University of Chicago does have frats, but their influence on social life is minimal). He can also check out schools with substance free dorms or other affinity dorms, which may offer an alternative to the party scenes. University of Rochester might be a good school, strong stem, good aid from what I understand, and not overpowering greek life. |
Bates grad here. There are lots of options at Bates, including a decent sized group of non-drinkers. |
| A lot of the liberal arts schools named here don't have engineering. |
| Liberty University, Oral Roberts University |
| Another SLAC grad here. No Greek system, but we sure knew how to drink. Rampant alcohol culture there. Students of legal age were allowed to keep alcohol in their dorm rooms, and we all just laughed at the whole no alcohol at hockey games thing. Suuuuuuuure. Obtaining copious quantities of cheap beer and going camping in the national forest with a bunch of friends was a time honored tradition among freshmen. |
| Not having frats doesn't mean there isn't a drinking culture. I went to New College in Florida, and we had a bust on campus for an acid lab. Hippie school, oh yeah. |
| Connecticut college. |
