anyone used dir/floortime? experience?

Your child sounds similiar to mine. How old is your child? Has the floor time helped in school? Jake as expensive as his father? I know where they are located. Did you have a developmental ped look at your child as well? Thanks for your help

I don't think ABA is for kids who are not on the spectrum. I think Greenspan would say that ABA is not for most spectrum kids either.

I don't think ABA provides more dramatic results. I think the human connection is necessary for the most dramatic results to be seen. ANd floortime develops that. But perhaps in some cases it is necessary for some spectrum kids.

DS has benefitted from seeing Jake. Jake explains things in simpler terms and is able to elaborate on points Dr. Greenspan has brought up with us. DS likes Jake tremendously also.

We did therapy with DIR for one year after which we felt we knew enough to do it at home by ourselves. But we still do followups every 3 mos with Jake.

PP here, my daughter is 5 and I think that the DIR/Floortime plus her OT at DIR has helped a lot in all areas of her life. It focuses on improving underlying abilities, in her case a lot of processing problems and word retrieval issues were keeping her from being as successful as she could be, esp. playing and interacting with kids.

To the PP, we did have a developmental ped at KK look at DD, it was pretty much a waste of time. He said that she wasn't autistic and might outgrow her issues if we got lucky. Beyond recommnding continuted OT he had no suggestions. Because we knew from that eval that she was not on the spectrum, we did not need a diagnosis. We skipped meeting with Dr. Greenspan and went right to working with Jake and one of the OTs at DIR.

I have heard that doing ABA with children not on the spectrum can make them more robotic and defiant. please be very careful using that approach. My son didn't respond well and they kept pushing with ABA until my son was so aggravated he shut down. we want him more assertive, not more of a follower? we started doing floortime recently and it is so much easier and less stressful. I heard lots of bad things about Serina? would you recommend going to her?

Please forgive this ignorant question, but what does poor social communication skills present as?

it can show up as delayed interaction, or only periodic interaction that doesn't last long. for kids with language it could be scripted or memorized language instead of meaningful and purposeful language. some kids can do these things, but have trouble doing them under more complex or stressful circumstances

Thanks! My 2.5 year old DD has lots of language, but a good deal of it seems scripted. I didn't realize that floortime can help with this. Good to know, thanks!

btw, how much does the initial eval, etc cost? I know the info has been posted somewhere but I can't find it. Thanks.
