Pests. Just a guess.

Some people are really ignorant when it comes to applying poisons. Pesticides can kill beneficial microbes in the soil that keep your plants healthy, and pesticides kill insects such as lady bugs and preying mantises that naturally eat pest insects and their eggs. Without careful training, you are likely to apply pesticides on so-called pests (insects that aren't doing any harm) and in the process destroy the natural fertility of your soil.

+1 If you wouldn't feel safe drinking a liquid why do you feel okay feeding that pesticide or herbicide to your yard?! This 1970s attitude that science can develop a magic compound to cure every problem lacks an appropriate understanding of complex systems and networks. Introducing something new into nature always leads to unintended consequences. If Fairfax wasn't so draconian in their policies toward animals, I would keep several laying hens in my backyard to eat the mosquitoes.

Hens can hop up and eat mosquitoes out of the air? That is cool.

Monsanto says pesticides are safe.

As for ladybugs, they're bugs, kill em dead.

OP, I would contact the authorities and have them test your soil for you. They can do it at anytime, you don't need to be home.

This neighbor sounds ridiculously stupid. It's 2014, don't most grown adults know about pesticides? Just because it is on the market, does NOT mean it is safe, by any means.

Thanks for the laugh!

I use food grade pesticides that was after with water. As an added bonus you will have a better crop yield because bugs will die.

You do realize some bugs are good for crops? And food grade does not necessarily mean safe, right?

Actually the vast majority of insects are beneficial to the garden and the ecosystem.

But some people are not.

Nuke your whole yard with Roundup, neighbors too. Keeps the property values up and the medical industry humming along too.
